Building an Alternative Future (BAF) is an association established and registered in Geneva, Switzerland in 2013 by a group of people committed to moving toward a more equitable society based on sustainable development in Armenia. Our activities concentrate on improving rural livelihoods.
Developing a social solidarity economy, rather than giving charity to impoverished families, enables them to become financially independent instead of relying on outside aid.
Unemployment is one of the most severe problems confronting Armenia and rising numbers are living in poverty. Lack of jobs results in a level of out-migration harmful to the country.
We are working in the poorest region, Shirak, which is also one of the richest in natural resources.
The enormous biodiversity of Armenia gives it great agricultural potential that remains unexploited. High altitude, abundance of water and the absence of industry or other sources of pollution create ideal conditions which the population lacks the means to use.
We aim to provide financial and technical means as well as expertise to enable people to make use of their capabilities. Our priority is to respect and respond to the needs of local communities, focusing our activities on what they themselves identify as most important. Their experience and knowledge of local conditions, especially ecological, such as the harvesting and use of plants and honey making, is fundamental.
BAF also plays a bridging role, permitting people everywhere to contribute to improving conditions in Armenia. This is done through the conception and implementation of projects with a particular focus on organic food production involving the local workforce and thus providing employment.
